Astoria and In.vision Bring Content Management to Microsoft Word

Partnership to Make Benefits of Astoria On-Demand's DITA-Based, Structured Content Management Available to Millions of Microsoft Word Users

SAN MATEO, Calif. and SAINT PETERSBURG, Fla. - July 30, 2007 – Microsoft Word users working for Forbes Global 2000 manufacturing companies will soon have access to Astoria On-Demand, the Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) solution for structured content management. Thanks to a technology development agreement announced today between Astoria Software and In.vision Research Corporation, engineers, technical documentation users, and other Word users will be able to easily author structured content to the Darwin Information Typing Architecture (DITA) standard and participate directly in the product documentation process managed by Astoria On-Demand.

"In.vision's add-in for Microsoft Word, Xpress Author, makes XML and DITA-based authoring in Word totally transparent to users. In fact, they can be completely unaware of XML or DITA," said Dan Ortega, vice president of marketing for Astoria Software. "By leveraging the simplicity of Word we will now be able to bring Astoria On-Demand to a much broader audience within the manufacturing organization – from engineering to marketing and beyond. Everybody can tap into the benefits of our content management system and take advantage of the accelerated, structured information flow."

John Friske, CEO of In.vision, said, "We're seeing a huge desire to spread structured content authoring throughout the organization. Companies want a more efficient way to capture the content that they are currently generating outside of any structured authoring environment. By expanding Astoria On-Demand to support Xpress Author for Word, Astoria and In.vision will make the most popular authoring tool work with the industry's most advanced content management system."

Together, In.vision and Astoria address the key challenges organizations face when making the transition to structured content management – the content authoring experience, the schema, and the content management system. In.vision simplifies the creation of XML and DITA-based content via Word. DITA simplifies getting started with the schema. And Astoria On-Demand simplifies content management with its turnkey, SaaS solution.

Historically, technical writers interview engineers and other domain experts for the information needed to write their documents. Sometimes engineers create content themselves – usually in Word – and forward it to the writers. While this eliminates the interviewing process, it introduces another clerical step into the documentation process as the writer must cut and paste the Word content into an XML editor.

Now, the In.vision and Astoria collaboration brings native XML and DITA support to Word documents, which can be managed – without modification – using Astoria On-Demand. For manufacturers, the collaboration signals the end of slow, costly, and error-prone documentation processes.

The In.vision and Astoria solution for Word is currently under development and will be available soon.
