Astoria Software and Translations.com Announce Translation-Enabled Content Management™ Initiative

Translation-Enabled Content Management unites XML content management and XML translation management under a Single, Secure, and Cost-effective Solution

SAN FRANCISCO, CA and NEW YORK, NY – November 18, 2009 – Astoria Software, provider of the world's first and most successful Enterprise solution for SaaS/On-Demand XML Component Content Management, and Translations.com, the world's largest privately held localization company with over 1,100 employees in over 50 offices on four continents, have aligned to create the world's first single, secure and cost-effective solution for managing and localizing XML content. This joint development initiative, Translation-Enabled Content Management, represents the seamless, service-level integration of Astoria On-Demand™ and Translations.com's GlobalLink™ Localization Suite. Translation-Enabled Content Management will provide global organizations with the most efficient and cost-effective way to quickly bring key product information to market simultaneously in any locale and language, with virtually no impact on internal IT resources, while enabling finance departments to better manage skyrocketing product-release costs.

"Content Management and Content Localization are really two parts of a single process to bring product information to market. However, many enterprise customers have had to engage with multiple vendors in separate purchasing events just to stitch those parts back together," said Dr. JoAnn Hackos, Director for the Center for Information Development Management and President of Comtech Services. "By seamlessly tying a Web-based XML Content Management service with a Web-based XML localization capability, Astoria Software and Translations.com have removed the boundaries between enterprise-class content management and translation helping customers develop a comprehensive enterprise-level process."

Key components of the Translation-Enabled Content Management initiative include:

  • Seamless integration of GlobalLink™ Project Director functionality embedded in the Astoria On-Demand user-interface, allowing users to initiate localization workflows with a single mouse click.
  • A vendor-neutral solution that allows Astoria On-Demand users to work directly with Translations.com's ISO-certified linguistic team or use other internal/external translation resources.
  • Centralized project tracking, business process automation and reporting for all localization projects across all vendors.
  • Server-based translation memory integration capabilities via GlobalLink™ TM Server, which ensures that clients will never translate the same phrase more than once.
  • Secure Socket Layer (SSL) encryption of all data travelling to and from the end-user's desktop, as well as data travelling between Astoria On-Demand and GlobalLink to ensure compliance with corporate IT requirements.
  • A fully-documented Service Oriented Architecture that enterprise IT departments can integrate into their SOA Governance and Deployment policy frameworks.
  • Unified, end-to-end solution for the creation, management, localization and production of XML-based documentation.
  • Data and Service hosting in Tier 1 data centers that comply with SAS 70 Type II guidelines for physical and logical security and resiliency.

Market Demands for Translation-Enabled Content Management

Global 2000 firms face enormous challenges in creating content for distribution to other locales throughout the world. These challenges can be enumerated as follows:

  • Translation of content is perceived as a separate function from the creation and management of product documentation. Therefore, firms must engage in two separate buying cycles to build an end-to-end solution for producing localized content.
  • Linking a content management system and a translation management system typically means that firms must spend extra money to create a specialized, "one-off" integration that requires significant investment of IT resources both for the initial integration and for ongoing maintenance of the integration.
  • The Language Service Provider (LSP) market is highly fragmented, yet some vendors try to lock customers into a "closed" system where only the vendor's management tools and translation resources are available, thereby forcing customers to discard trusted localization providers who are not part of the vendor's network.

The Translation-Enabled Content Management initiative addresses the root causes of these problems. Its fundamental principles are:

  • There should be an end-to-end solution for the creation, management, localization, and production of product documentation.
  • Customers should be allowed to tie together the services of existing and trusted vendors of either content management or translation management without being forced into a closed system defined by any single vendor.
  • The rise of SOA and Software-as-a-Service gives customers a real avenue for building end-to-end solutions that are simple to integrate, conform to IT governance policies, and are delivered by best-of-breed service providers.

Michael Rosinski, President and Chief Executive Officer of Astoria, said, "Translation-Enabled Content Management is a key initiative for our company, and we are honored to have a partner in Translations.com in which to make it happen. Our respective world-class offerings will now be unified so that customers can manage an entire enterprise of XML content throughout its lifecycle, from creation to localization to distribution."

Commenting on the Translation-Enabled Content Management initiative, Phil Shawe, President and CEO of Translations.com said, "It has always been my goal for the GlobalLink™ Localization Suite to give global organizations an open, flexible and agile technology solution to help them manage the complexities of the localization process. By bringing GlobalLink™ together with Astoria Software, we are breaking the dependency between tools and resources, and providing customers with a powerful, intuitive and IT-friendly solution for localizing documentation."
